Emancipation Proclamation

January 2, 1863

Yesterday President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation freeing all slaves in rebelling states.  This document has already received hatred from Copperheads around the north and every slaveholder in the south.  It has become quite obvious that the south is going to completely ignore this document and the only apparent way that the freedom that this document promises is dependent on Union Military victories.  For every Union victory in the south and every town that they take, that's more slaves freed.  This document marks the first start in the legal actions to abolish slavery in the south and trying to abolish slavery everywhere once and for all.  The president and other government officials predict that once slaves themselves learn about document will make their way north as the Union defeats the south to fight in the Union army against the people who in slaved them.  Anywhere from 100,000-200,000 black soldiers are predicted to join the Union army.  It is estimated that the amount of slaves freed by the Emancipation Proclamation is between 3.5 and 4 million, a very large part of the southern population.  The new year and new document mark a turing point in the war, now the President and much of the North are starting to change their reason to be fighting this war.  Initially, Lincoln was fighting just to keep the Union together, but now, the nation is fighting to abolish slavery and the southern way of life.  None of us know the outcome of this war, but we must all pray to whatever god we worship that this blood bath will end soon and the nation will be sewn back together.
